The joy of abstraction

 Universe Stage

Maths isn’t just about numbers, equations, and getting the right answer. In this talk, based on her new book, Eugenia Cheng will show how even high-level abstract maths can be accessible, open-ended, and joyful. She will introduce category theory, (abstract mathematics typically only seen by advanced maths students) which she has been teaching to art students for several years. Eugenia brings abstract mathematical ideas down to earth using examples of social justice, current events, and everyday life; and will argue that “abstract” doesn’t mean “irrelevant”, but rather, that abstract thinking can help us understand urgent issues in the world around us. Abstract also doesn’t have to mean “difficult”: the only prerequisites are curiosity and an open mind about what maths really is.
