Description

Writing Math: Perspectives from Authors and Educators is an event that aims to bring together leading authors—mathematicians, educators, and journalists—who are shaping how mathematics is written for and shared with the general public. Through short talks, a fireside chat and a lively panel discussion, participants will explore the art of translating complex ideas into engaging stories for wide audiences.

Featured authors include:

  • Patchen Barss science journalist and author of The Impossible Man: Roger Penrose and the Cost of Genius and Flow Spin Grow: Looking for Patterns in Nature.
  • Anthony Bonato (Toronto Metropolitan University), mathematician and author of Dots and Lines, which explores the hidden networks of social media, AI, and nature.
  • Eugenia Cheng (School of the Art Institute of Chicago), mathematician, pianist, and bestselling author of How to Bake Pi and Unequal, known for making mathematics accessible to all.
  • Noah Giansiracusa (Bentley University), mathematician and author of How Algorithms Create and Prevent Fake News and Robin Hood Math, examining the role of math in society.
  • Siobhan Roberts, science journalist and biographer, acclaimed for works such as Genius at Play and King of Infinite Space, which bring the lives of mathematicians to a broad readership.
  • Paulina Rowińska  (author of Mapmatics: How We Navigate the World Through Numbers), mathematician, and journalist at Quanta Magazine.
  • Kyne Santos, drag queen, educator, and math communicator, author of Math in Drag, and a well known creator of popular math content on TikTok and YouTube.

The fireside chats will be moderated by Autumn Phaneuf, engineer, science communicator, host of the Breaking Math podcast, and CEO of Breaking Math Media. This hybrid event will take place both in person and online, with a livestream available via Zoom to connect audiences around the world. Designed to be fully accessible, the event welcomes all mathematicians, educators, journalists, students and anyone curious about the power of math communication.

By showcasing a range of voices and approaches, Writing Math highlights the importance of making mathematics engaging and understandable to all. Attendees will gain fresh insights into the craft of math storytelling, while authors share their expertise and expand the reach of their work.
