from event website:
Sixth College is thrilled to bring Dr. Eugenia Cheng, a mathematician, educator, author, and concert pianist, to UC San Diego for our annual CAT Conversations. Dr. Cheng’s work focuses on making math accessible and meaningful beyond the classroom. She is Scientist-in-Residence at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an Honorary Visiting Fellow at City St. George’s, University of London.
Dr. Cheng has written several acclaimed books for general audiences, including Is Math Real? and The Joy of Abstraction, which explore how mathematics connects to everyday life, big questions, and social issues. She also writes the “Everyday Math” column for The Wall Street Journal and appears regularly in the media to discuss math, logic, and problem-solving.
This year, CAT students will read an excerpt from Dr. Cheng’s most recent book, Unequal: The Math of When Things Do and Don’t Add Up. You can purchase the book to read along with CAT 1 courses! At her talk, Dr. Cheng will invite students to think about how mathematics can help us make sense of the world in creative and unexpected way
