SUMMARY:Talk\, CMC "Mathematical Secrets in Music"
DESCRIPTION:from event website: \n\n\nMath and music are often said to be related\, but does this go any deeper than the fact that they both involve counting? In this lively hybrid of talk and concert\, mathematician and pianist Eugenia Cheng uncovers mathematical structures in some of her favorite pieces of classical music. She will perform works by Bach\, Schubert\, Schumann\, Brahms\, Chopin\, Ravel\, and Debussy. The music will be interspersed with discussion of a wide range mathematical concepts in the music including lowest common multiples\, prime numbers\, fractions\, fractals\, braids and more. \n\n\n\n\nEugenia Cheng is a mathematician\, educator\, author\, public speaker\, columnist\, concert pianist\, artist\, and composer. She was an early pioneer of math on YouTube and her videos have been viewed over 20 million times to date. She is the author of popular math books including “Unequal” and “How to Bake Pi” and she wrote the “Everyday Math” column for the Wall Street Journal for over seven years. \nCheng is Scientist in Residence at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, won tenure in Pure Mathematics at the University in Sheffield\, and holds a Ph.D. in pure mathematics from the University of Cambridge.

SUMMARY:Talk\, UC San Diego Sixth College "Cat Conversations"
DESCRIPTION:from event website: \nSixth College is thrilled to bring Dr. Eugenia Cheng\, a mathematician\, educator\, author\, and concert pianist\, to UC San Diego for our annual CAT Conversations. Dr. Cheng’s work focuses on making math accessible and meaningful beyond the classroom. She is Scientist-in-Residence at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an Honorary Visiting Fellow at City St. George’s\, University of London. \nDr. Cheng has written several acclaimed books for general audiences\, including Is Math Real? and The Joy of Abstraction\, which explore how mathematics connects to everyday life\, big questions\, and social issues. She also writes the “Everyday Math” column for The Wall Street Journal and appears regularly in the media to discuss math\, logic\, and problem-solving. \nThis year\, CAT students will read an excerpt from Dr. Cheng’s most recent book\, Unequal: The Math of When Things Do and Don’t Add Up. You can purchase the book to read along with CAT 1 courses! At her talk\, Dr. Cheng will invite students to think about how mathematics can help us make sense of the world in creative and unexpected way
