SUMMARY:Talk\, Closing Session at NCTM - Los Angeles
DESCRIPTION:NCTM Annual Meeting and Exposition\nOne Mathematics\, Many Voices:\nSharing Our Collective Stories of Rehumanizing\nMathematics Teaching and Learning\n\n\n\nClosing Session: The Art of Logic in an Illogical World\nSaturday\, October 1\, 2022\n12:30 – 1:30 PM PT \nFor thousands of years\, mathematicians have used the timeless art of logic to see the world more clearly. I will show how mathematics can help us address the divisive arguments all around us today. Taking a careful scalpel to politics\, privilege\, sexism and other real-world situations\, I will show how math can help us find clarity without losing nuance. \nSpeaker: Eugenia Cheng\, PhD\, School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, Illinois

SUMMARY:Talk & Concert\, Cheltenham Science Festival "Maths\, Music\, and “A Woman’s Life and Love”
DESCRIPTION:https://www.cheltenhamfestivals.com/science/whats-on/2022/maths-music-and-a-womans-life-and-love \nAbout this Event\n\nMathematician Eugenia Cheng examines women in maths and maths in music through a unique combination of lecture and concert. With soprano Sarah Gabriel she’ll perform her reworked version of Schumann’s song cycle “A Woman’s Life and Love” – with a modern feminist twist. Instead of fading away when her husband dies\, our heroine instead sings about ambition\, imposter syndrome\, bullying and forging a new path\, leaving the old systems behind. Eugenia describes her own unusual career as a mathematician and concert pianist and how the process of writing the piece expanded the themes beyond feminism\, to inclusivity in general.

SUMMARY:talk\, The PTI
DESCRIPTION:from the host site: \nStrengthen your understanding with this online CPD course for Maths teachers. \nThe question of why women and minorities are under-represented in mathematics is complex and there are no simple answers\, only many contributing factors. Eugenia will draw on a combination of precise mathematical reasoning\, techniques of abstract mathematical thinking\, and her experiences as a woman in the male-dominated field of mathematics. Eugenia will argue that if we focus character traits rather than gender we can have a more productive and less divisive conversation\, about math and beyond. She will present a new theory for doing so\, showing that we can use abstract mathematical thinking to work towards a more inclusive society in this politically divisive era. \nEugenia will present the abstract field of Category Theory as a particularly inclusive subject area according to the dimensions of my her theory\, and demonstrate its scope for deepening the curiosity and social awareness of secondary school students\, rather than just pushing and evaluating them. This goes against the assumption that abstract mathematics can only be taught to high level undergraduates and graduate students\, and the accusation that abstract mathematics is removed from real life.

SUMMARY:Talk\, Categories and Companions Symposium
DESCRIPTION:from the host website: \nAbout\nCategory theory is a branch of mathematics which seeks to understand abstract mathematical structures and the relationships between them. Originating in investigations of connections between algebra and topology\, category theory has broad applications across various branches of pure mathematics\, as well as logic\, computer science\, linguistics and physics. \nCategories and Companions Symposium 2021 (CaCS2021) is an event for research students (Honours/Masters/PhD) in category theory and related disciplines from around the world to meet each other and share their work. Everyone is welcome to attend the event. Each day will feature a 50 minute talk by an invited speaker and a series of 20 minute contributed talks by research students\, split across two sessions — the first aimed at Australasian and American time zones and the second at Australasian\, African and European time zones. Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet and talk to each other in smaller groups at various times throughout the symposium. \nRegistration is now open (for both research students and the wider community) via the linked Google Form. When registering\, all research students (Honours/Masters/PhD) are invited to propose a title and abstract for a 20 minute talk in category theory or category theory adjacent topics. Talks about work in progress\, and talks by those who usually have fewer opportunities to present internationally\, are very welcome and especially encouraged. Upon submitting the registration form\, a link titled Edit your response will be presented; talk proposals may be edited using this link up until the registration deadline for speakers. The registration deadline for speakers is Friday\, May 7\, 2021 23:59:59 Anywhere on Earth. The registration deadline for non-speaking attendees is Friday\, June 4\, 2021 23:59:59 Anywhere on Earth.

SUMMARY:Talk\, Keynote Speaker - OAME Virtual Conference
DESCRIPTION:Inclusion-exclusion in mathematics: who stays in\, who falls out\, why it happens\, and what we could do about it. \nThe question of why women and minorities are under-represented in mathematics is complex and there are no simple answers\, only many contributing factors. I will focus on character traits\, and argue that if we focus on this rather than gender we can have a more productive and less divisive conversation. To try and focus on characters rather than genders I will introduce gender-neutral character adjectives\, “ingressive” and “congressive”\, as a new dimension to shift our focus away from masculine and feminine. I will share my experience of teaching congressive abstract mathematics to art students\, in a congressive way\, and the possible effects this could have for everyone in mathematics\, not just women.

SUMMARY:Talk\, Charleston Festival (Available until May 16th)
DESCRIPTION:from host website \n(Available until May 16th) \nWhen you look at the hard facts and figures\, economics is gendered\, exclusionary and unequal. \nTogether with our host\, award-winning journalist Anita Anand\, join international best-selling writer and mathematician Eugenia Cheng and ‘Prospect Magazine’ Top 25 Global Thinker Linda Scott for a talk which challenges and interrogates the root of these systemic inequalities and lays out clear solutions that re-imagine economics from new perspectives. \nUnpacking the topics covered in their latest books\, Cheng and Scott discuss the social\, financial and environmental potential that could be achieved by giving women economic empowerment of their own and give tips on everyday changes you can make to stop these inequalities from growing.

SUMMARY:Talk\, University of Ottawa Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Associativity\, Commutativity and Units: a Higher-dimensional ballet \nThe event page is here. \nAbstract: \nAssociativity\, commutativity and unit laws are axioms we typically learn about early on\, in the context of numbers. We might then take them for granted until we meet non-commutative situations\, such as multiplication of matrices\, or symmetry groups. In higher dimensions we start to encounter non-associativity and non-unitality as well\, but there is more nuance: rather than associativity simply being true or not true\, there are shades of grey\, where associativity holds up to isomorphism\, equivalence\, or just some sort of map. In this talk I will describe how those familiar three families of axioms become the essence of all the interesting features of weak higher-dimensional category theory. Moreover\, rather than being three different types of axioms they are inextricably related via a higher-dimensional version of distributivity. The ballet they present is one of ebb and flow\, give and take\, where rigidity for one “dancer” always needs to be offset by flexibility in another. I will show that the apparently mundane maths of high school has deep category theoretical insights embedded in it\, if we care to look. I will not assume any prior knowledge of category theory\, but prior interest in pure mathematics will help. \nThe talk will be by Zoom\, with links sent to anyone who registers. \nClick here to register.
