SUMMARY:"Gender in Math\, Science\, and Beyond" Talk\, Texas Christian University
DESCRIPTION:from the event website: \nDr. Eugenia Cheng will visit TCU April 2 & 3 as Green Honors Chair \n\nDr. Eugenia Cheng\, Scientist in Residence at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, will be visiting the TCU Department of Mathematics as a Green Honors Chair. Dr. Cheng has a Ph.D. from the Cambridge University. She is a mathematician\, educator\, author\, public speaker\, columnist\, concert pianist\, composer\, and artist who has been interviewed on NPR\, BBC\, and “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.” She will be giving the following lectures: \n\n\nThursday\, April 3rd\, 4:00-5:00pm  Sid Richardson Hall\, Lecture Hall 1\,  2955 South University Drive\, Fort Worth\, TX 76109\nGender in Math\, Science and Beyond \nThe question of why women and minorities are under-represented in mathematics is complex and there are no simple answers\, only many contributing factors. I will focus on character traits\, and argue that if we focus on this rather than gender we can have a more productive and less divisive conversation. To try and focus on characters rather than genders I will introduce gender-neutral character adjectives “ingressive” and “congressive” as a new dimension to shift our focus away from masculine and feminine. I will share my experience of teaching congressive abstract mathematics to art students\, in a congressive way\, and the possible benefits this could have for everyone in mathematics\, not just women.

SUMMARY:Talk\, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics
DESCRIPTION:from event website: \n\nOpening Session Keynote\n\n\n\nIs Math Real? How Simple Questions Lead Us to Mathematics’ Deepest Truths\nWednesday\, September 25\, 2024\n5:30 – 7:00 PM \n  \nWhere does math come from: from rules in a textbook? From logic and deduction? Not quite. In this talk Eugenia Cheng will argue that math comes from human curiosity – most importantly\, from asking questions. Many people are discouraged from asking these questions in school\, thinking they’re too simple to be taken seriously\, or being told that their questions are stupid. But often\, these simple-sounding questions lead to wondrous mathematical revelations. Dr. Cheng will take us on a journey of discovery starting with questions like “Why does 2×3 = 3×2?” and “What’s the point of math?” leading us into research-level abstract mathematics. The journey will take us via food\, music\, hairstyles\, and other unexpected topics\, revealing how profound insights can emerge from seemingly unlikely sources\, and showing that being the kid who asked “But\, why does 1+1=2?” could be more important than being the kid who always got the right answers.

SUMMARY:Talk\, Royal Institution "Is Maths Real?"
DESCRIPTION:from event website: \nJoin Ri favourite Eugenia Cheng as she transforms our traditional understanding of maths\, presenting it not as a succession of rigid rules\, but as a vibrant\, living discipline. \nFrom the purpose of algebra\, the dynamic interplay of odd and even numbers\, and why -(-1) equals 1\, Eugenia unravels intricate questions with intelligence and passion. Complex concepts become accessible anecdotes\, showcasing how unconventional sources offer profound insights\, while we are encouraged to view mathematics as a dynamic part of our understanding of the world. \nAs Eugenia delves into the foundations of mathematical thought\, she uncovers the inherent beauty and elegance of the discipline\, celebrating the genuine curiosity that drives mathematical inquiry. Uncover the connections between mathematical principles and our reality and gain an even deeper appreciation for the subject and its dynamic part in our understanding of our world. \nCopies of Cheng’s new publication\, ‘Is Maths Real?: How Simple Questions Lead Us to Mathematics’ Deepest Truths’\, will be on sale at this talk. \nDigital Science proudly sponsors this event as part of its Speaker Series. More information on this series can be found here.

SUMMARY:Talk\, University of Mississippi\, Dalrymple Series
DESCRIPTION:from event website: \nWhere does math come from: from rules in a textbook? From logic and deduction? Not quite. In this talk Eugenia Cheng will argue that math comes from human curiosity – most importantly\, from asking questions. Many people are discouraged from asking these questions in school\, thinking they’re too simple to be taken seriously\, or being told that their questions are stupid. But often\, these simple-sounding questions lead to wondrous mathematical revelations. Dr Cheng will take us on a journey of discovery starting with questions like “Why does 2×3 = 3×2?” and “What’s the point of math?”\, leading us into research-level abstract mathematics. The journey will take us via food\, music\, hairstyles\, and other unexpected topics\, revealing how profound insights can emerge from seemingly unlikely sources\, and showing that being the kid who asked “But\, why does 1+1=2?” could be more important than being the kid who always got the right answers. \n  \nDr. Eugenia Cheng\, Scientist in Residence at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, is a world-renowned educator\, author\, and public speaker.  She is the author of several popular mathematics books\, including “How to Bake Pi” and “Joy of Abstraction”.  Her books have received widespread acclaim from sources including The New York Times\, National Geographic\, and Scientific American; and she has been featured on programs around the world including the BBC\, NPR\, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. \n  \nThe Dalrymple Lecture Series in the University of Mississippi Department of Mathematics was endowed by Mr. and Mrs. Arch Dalrymple III of Amory\, Mississippi. Arch Dalrymple attended Cornell University\, Amherst College and UM\, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in 1947. \nThe Dalrymple Lecture Series brings distinguished speakers to discuss mathematics and mathematics research. Lectures are aimed at the general audience—students and non-mathematicians are encouraged to attend. \n  \nThe 2023 Dalrymple Lecture is sponsored by the Department of Mathematics\, the College of Liberal Arts\, the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement\, and the UM Lecture Series. \n  \nThis event is free and open to the public.  Light refreshments will be served at 5:30pm.

SUMMARY:Topos Institute\, Category Theory outreach panel
DESCRIPTION:from the event website: \n\n\nAbout\nCategory theory is a wonderful subject\, deep and broad\, spanning the breadth of mathematics and having applications throughout science\, engineering\, technology\, and the arts. But for people outside of academia\, it can be a difficult subject to learn. Topos Institute is hosting a panel discussion\, moderated by Emily Riehl\, to help people get a better handle on how they may begin to learn the subject and to help category theorists understand what they can do to facilitate this process. The discussion will be livestreamed and then archived on the Topos Institute YouTube channel for all to view. \nIf you are interested in learning CT\, please submit a question to our panel. We probably will not have time to answer technical questions\, but questions about intuition\, motivation\, resources\, processes for learning\, applications\, challenges\, culture\, philosophy\, etc. are more than welcome. To submit a question\, please use the form linked below. \nQuestion submission form ↗︎
