DESCRIPTION:(from the event website) \nOwning Your Worth Professional Development Workshop \nOctober 15\, 2018 \n6:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. \nIf you google “women and self-esteem” you’ll get over 7 million hits.  Women who show signs of low self-esteem have a damaged sense of self-worth that most likely began in childhood.  Women with low self-esteem were often mistreated by authority figures and peers.  Given confidence is defined as our belief in our ability to succeed at a given task\, a lack of it drives risk aversion and makes people less willing to pursue new challenges.   As pointed out in The Confidence Code by Katty Kay and Claire Shipman seems that an important piece of the puzzle in bridging the gender gap is addressing the gender confidence gap. \nJoin our guest speakers Bianca Cotton and Eugenia Cheng.

I will focus on character traits\, and argue that if we focus on this rather than gender we can have a more productive and less divisive conversation. To try and focus on characters rather than genders I will introduce gender-neutral character adjectives “ingressive” and “congressive” to replace masculine and feminine. I will share my experience of teaching congressive abstract mathematics to art students\, in a congressive way\, and the possible effects this could have for everyone in mathematics\, not just women. I will present the field of Category Theory as a particularly congressive subject area\, accessible to bright high school students\, and contrast it with the types of math that are often used to push or stimulate those students. No prior knowledge will be needed.”

DESCRIPTION:from the event webpage: \n“CATEGORY THEORY AND LIFE \nCategory theory can be thought of as being “very abstract algebra”.  It is thought of as “too abstract” by some people\, and as “abstract nonsense” by some others.  In this talk I will show that while it is abstract\, it is far from being nonsense.  I will argue that the abstraction has a purpose and that broad applicability is one of the powerful consequences.  To demonstrate this\, I will show how I apply concepts of category theory to important questions of life such as prejudice\, privilege\, blame and responsibility.  I will introduce the category theory concepts from scratch so no prior knowledge is needed.  These concepts will include objects and morphisms\, isomorphisms and universal properties.”
