She is Scientist In Residence at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She won tenure in Pure Mathematics at the University of Sheffield\, UK and is now Honorary Visiting Fellow at City\, University of London. She has previously taught at the Universities of Cambridge\, Chicago and Nice and holds a PhD in pure mathematics from the University of Cambridge. Alongside her research in Category Theory and undergraduate teaching her aim is to rid the world of “math phobia”.  Her first popular math book\, How to Bake Pi\, was published by Profile (UK)/Basic Books (US) in 2015 to widespread acclaim including from the New York Times\, National Geographic\, Scientific American\, and she was interviewed around the world including on the BBC\, NPR and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Eugenia was an early pioneer of math on YouTube and her videos have been viewed around 15 million times to date. Her next popular math book\, Beyond Infinity was published in 2017 and was shortlisted for the Royal Society Insight Investment Science Book Prize 2017\, and The Art of Logic was published by Profile and Basic Books in 2018\, and “x + y : A Mathematician’s Manifesto for Rethinking Gender” in 2020. She is a mathematician\, educator\, author\, public speaker\, columnist\, concert pianist\, composer\, and artist who has been interviewed on NPR\, BBC\, and “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.” She will be giving the following lectures: \n\n\nThursday\, April 3rd\, 4:00-5:00pm  Sid Richardson Hall\, Lecture Hall 1\,  2955 South University Drive\, Fort Worth\, TX 76109\nGender in Math\, Science and Beyond \nThe question of why women and minorities are under-represented in mathematics is complex and there are no simple answers\, only many contributing factors. I will focus on character traits\, and argue that if we focus on this rather than gender we can have a more productive and less divisive conversation. To try and focus on characters rather than genders I will introduce gender-neutral character adjectives “ingressive” and “congressive” as a new dimension to shift our focus away from masculine and feminine. I will share my experience of teaching congressive abstract mathematics to art students\, in a congressive way\, and the possible benefits this could have for everyone in mathematics\, not just women.

Not quite. In this talk Eugenia Cheng will argue that math comes from human curiosity – most importantly\, from asking questions. Many people are discouraged from asking these questions in school\, thinking they’re too simple to be taken seriously\, or being told that their questions are stupid. But often\, these simple-sounding questions lead to wondrous mathematical revelations. Dr. Cheng will take us on a journey of discovery starting with questions like “Why does 2×3 = 3×2?” and “What’s the point of math?” leading us into research-level abstract mathematics. The journey will take us via food\, music\, hairstyles\, and other unexpected topics\, revealing how profound insights can emerge from seemingly unlikely sources\, and showing that being the kid who asked “But\, why does 1+1=2?” could be more important than being the kid who always got the right answers.

DESCRIPTION:from event website: \nDr Eugenia Cheng will describe her journey from “normal” apolitical mathematician\, to mathematician-artist-musician. Previously shying away from discussing political and social issues\, she now does the opposite and uses her math\, music\, and art in intertwined ways to address these topics head on. During this multi-disciplinary presentation she will present abstract mathematics that she uses to discuss social issues with art students; she will also show some of her mathematical art installations with social themes\, and perform some of her songs. No mathematical background is needed. There will be free pizza for the first 50 attendees! \nDr Eugenia Cheng is a mathematician\, educator\, author\, public speaker\, columnist\, concert pianist\, artist and composer. She is Scientist in Residence at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, won tenure in Pure Mathematics at the University in Sheffield\, and holds a PhD in pure mathematics from the University of Cambridge. She was an early pioneer of math on YouTube and her videos have been viewed over 20 million times to date. She is the author of eight popular math books including “How to Bake Pi”\, and “x+y: A Mathematician’s Manifesto for Rethinking Gender” and two children’s books. Her books have been translated into twenty languages so far. She has given talks and interviews around the world including for the BBC\, NPR\, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Dr Cheng is the founder of the Liederstube\, an intimate oasis for art song based in Chicago\, writes the Everyday Math column for the Wall Street Journal\, and has completed several art commissions and song commissions. Her song “The Mother Who Died\, Too” was commissioned for Laura Strickling’s 40@40 project\, the recording of which has been nominated for a GRAMMY award.
