SUMMARY:Talk\, Closing Session at NCTM - Los Angeles
DESCRIPTION:NCTM Annual Meeting and Exposition\nOne Mathematics\, Many Voices:\nSharing Our Collective Stories of Rehumanizing\nMathematics Teaching and Learning\n\n\n\nClosing Session: The Art of Logic in an Illogical World\nSaturday\, October 1\, 2022\n12:30 – 1:30 PM PT \nFor thousands of years\, mathematicians have used the timeless art of logic to see the world more clearly. I will show how mathematics can help us address the divisive arguments all around us today. Taking a careful scalpel to politics\, privilege\, sexism and other real-world situations\, I will show how math can help us find clarity without losing nuance. \nSpeaker: Eugenia Cheng\, PhD\, School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, Illinois

SUMMARY:Talk\, New Scientist Live - London
DESCRIPTION:from the host website: \n\nThe joy of abstraction\n Universe Stage\n\n\nMaths isn’t just about numbers\, equations\, and getting the right answer. In this talk\, based on her new book\, Eugenia Cheng will show how even high-level abstract maths can be accessible\, open-ended\, and joyful. She will introduce category theory\, (abstract mathematics typically only seen by advanced maths students) which she has been teaching to art students for several years. Eugenia brings abstract mathematical ideas down to earth using examples of social justice\, current events\, and everyday life; and will argue that “abstract” doesn’t mean “irrelevant”\, but rather\, that abstract thinking can help us understand urgent issues in the world around us. Abstract also doesn’t have to mean “difficult”: the only prerequisites are curiosity and an open mind about what maths really is.

SUMMARY:Talk\, "The Square Root of 2 and the Devil in Music" - Caltech Y
DESCRIPTION:from event website: \nTime & Location\n\n\nOct 19\, 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM \nAthenaeum\, 551 S Hill Ave\, Pasadena\, CA 91106\, USA \n\n\n\nAbout The Event\n\n\n\nNo Host Bar 6:00 pm \nDinner 7:00 pm \nSpeaker 8:00 pm \n  \nPlease RSVP by October 10th\, 2022 \nSpace is limited. \n  \nPer Caltech policy\, all guests are required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination for entry. \nPlease bring vaccination documentation with you to the event. \n— \nThe square root of 2 is one of the great conundrums of mathematics.  So easy to describe but so difficult to pin down! What actually is it?  The devil in music or “diabolo in musica” is the tritone\, and it acquired this nickname because it is the most dissonant of all intervals. With demonstrations on the piano and violin\, Dr.  Cheng will weave these two stories together. We will see how a mathematical understanding of irrational numbers leads to the well-tempered tuning system that inspired Bach to write preludes and fugues in every key (twice) and how the square root of two gives rise to the devil in music. \n  \nDr. Eugenia Cheng is a mathematician\, concert pianist\, and Scientist in Residence at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Alongside  her research in Category Theory and undergraduate teaching\, her aim is  to rid the world of “math phobia.” She was an early pioneer of math on YouTube\, and her book\, How to Bake Pi was featured on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Her latest book\, X + Y: A  Mathematician’s Manifesto for Rethinking Gender was released in 2020. \n  \nFriends dinners are unique evenings where the Caltech and Pasadena communities come together to engage with world-renowned scientific\,  humanitarian\, and civic leaders. You are receiving this event because you are a Friend of the Caltech Y or a Friend is inviting you. Friends dinners are not fundraising events. Our ticket price covers our cost for the evening.
